Dealing with regulations on a day to day basis.

Regulations are not just something you have to take into consideration before inspections. Instead they're something you have to live with every day. This is the place to post great ideas you have on how to organize yourself or inexpensive ways you "fixed" an issue you may have had! I look forward to learning from you!

Alternative to paper towels
Ok, so I HATE spending my money and I see papertowels as throwing my money right in the garbage can. Sooo, here are a couple of good ideas. At my old house, I had a nice big bathroom. I took a tension rod and set it up low where the kids could reach. I was able to hang it right at the edge of my bathtub. Then when I'd get a new child in my program, I had the parent give me 5 wash-clothes that were "old". I'd take a magic marker and put their name on a corner. Every morning I'd hang a new one on a clothes pin hanging from the rod. Those wash-clothes are the perfect size for the children to dry their hands with. At one point one of the girls asked if they could decorate the clothes-pins as well. Helped them recognize their own a little quicker. At my new house, I have a half bath, so the rod concept doesn't work here. So instead I hang clothes pins from various sized strings on the back of the bathroom door. They can reach the towels just as well. AND on Fridays I give mom and dad the dirty ones and they know to bring them back on Monday or I charge them a penalty.

Out let plugs
When I have to remove a cover for something, I put it right in my pocket with the points facing my leg. This way if I get distracted, the next time I sit down, the points go right into my leg causing me much pain! It's a good reminder to go right back and put the cover back on! I don't have a good solution for my teenaged son or husband! I've just started to tell them they aren't allowed to use outlets in rooms that I use for daycare! But for them, I tend to leave extra outlet covers in a drawer in my kitchen so if I spot one, I have a cover I can pop in instead of trying to search for the one they removed! I even went so far as to point out to my local library that they didn't have outlet covers in the children's room. Because of my pointing it out to them, they bought covers and use them now too!

The furnace
You'll have to check the regulations for the exact details, but there is a regulation that says you have to area around your furnace free from combustables and garbage. Let's say it says 2 feet. What I did was measured out the distance around the furnance and marked it. Then I took a can of spray paint and painted my "idiot proof" lines around the furnace. I let my 14 year old and my husband know that the area in that space needs to remain clear at all times. Helps them help me keep "up to code". No excuses for any of us that way!

Free training on mandated reporting
Ok, it's posted here under events as well, but wanted to let people know! :) Free 24/7 on-line Mandated Report training in child abuse offered by Office of Children and Family Services: You don't have to wait in line - you wont get refused. Just go to http://www.nysmandatedreporter.org/courses.html to register. You have 30 days to complete the course and you get 2 hours of training. The course is broken up into small sections, making it easier to stop and come back to it. Plus the great part is when (or if) you sign back in, it's saved your spot for you so you can jump right back in without having to try and firgure out where you left off!
